Anxiety can start as something simple, like a worry. Some worries are healthy and necessary. They keep us safe, motivated, and alert. When you're worry becomes a feeling that overwhelms you- that you can't stop thinking about- it can be debilitating. When you're thoughts are constantly racing, your heart feels like it's pounding out of your chest, and your breathing becomes more fast paced, it can be difficult to function throughout your day. School or work might be impossible to focus on. You're on edge with family or friends because you don't have energy or attention to give them. You might even find yourself forgetting appointments or meetings because your mind is occupied by these worries.
Over time, anxiety can take a toll on our bodies. Our stress from constant worrying creates a build up of the hormone called cortisol and can affect so many parts of our lives. It can even effect our physical health- our immune system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive organs, cardiovascular health, weight, eating or drinking habits, sleep cycles, the list goes on.
Your emotional and physical health are important to your every day functioning. Anxiety can be treated. You can be in control of your thoughts and feelings. Counseling can help you take that control back and start living your life for the present moment rather than feeling overwhelmed by all of the 'what ifs'.
